Applying global principles

EIRIS Convention Watch explores claims that companies have broken international principles on human rights, labour standards, the environment, health & safety or bribery.

Convention Watch provides a clear understanding of the many serious negative allegations made against companies in press articles and through NGO campaigns. It reviews and assesses allegations of company breaches of the spirit of major international conventions on human rights, labour standards, the environment, corruption, anti-personnel landmines and cluster munitions. Full reports on companies’ performance are provided.

The areas we research are those on which the UN Global Compact and the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) are based. By analysing and reporting on allegations relating to these areas EIRIS provides an indication to investors of company performance on these key issues. Examples of the international standards we cover include the UN Human Rights Norms for Business, the Convention on Biological Diversity and the UN Convention on Corruption.

How we do the research

EIRIS monitors over 150 press sources and around 60 NGO sources from around the world every month for allegations of company breaches of international conventions. On a quarterly basis our researchers assess which of the allegations identified are the most serious and then produce Convention Watch reports for those cases. Each report includes a detailed description of the issue and an analysis of what the company must do in order to address the allegation. A key element of the service is engagement with the company about their response to the allegation.

EIRIS applies a thorough and transparent methodological framework, based upon best practice principles, to assess whether the allegations against a company have been addressed. This includes assessment of the company response to engagement by EIRIS.

Convention Watch provides a useful indicator of company performance and can be used in conjunction with data within EPM on company systems, processes and reporting, or as a stand-alone service.
